Shelter Stone supports the Hodgson Brothers Memorial Relay 2026
Few events capture the spirit of fell running quite like the Hodgson Brothers Memorial Relay. Established in 1986 in memory of Ian Hodgson, who died tragically in a cycling accident, the relay has grown into the UK's longest-running mountain relay and one of the most cherished fixtures in the fell-running calendar. Held on the fells surrounding Patterdale, the event brings together around 70 teams from across the country to tackle a demanding four-leg course over some of the Lake District's most iconic terrain, combining competitive racing, mountain craft, teamwork and an unrivalled social atmosphere.
Shelter Stone was delighted to support the Hodgson Brothers Memorial Relay again in 2026, providing professional medical and response capability throughout the event. While the mountains always demand respect, incidents at fell running events are thankfully minor, and this year was no exception.
Our team spent the day doing exactly what we hope to do at every event: being visible, approachable and available if needed. Most of our work involved treating the inevitable bumps, scrapes, and minor injuries that come with a hard day out in the fells.
The event organisers deserve credit for their forward-thinking approach to participant welfare. Investing in a professional medical and response team isn't just about preparing for major emergencies. It creates an environment where participants know help is immediately available, whether for a major incident or something as simple as a graze. An experienced team on the ground provides reassurance, supports sound decision-making, and contributes to the overall quality of the event experience.
One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is supporting grassroots events that sit at the heart of their communities. The Hodgson Brothers Memorial Relay is a perfect example. Despite its stature within the sport, it retains the friendly, volunteer-led atmosphere that makes fell running unique. For many Shelter Stone team members, the event feels less like work and more like a day spent among friends. It was a pleasure to catch up with familiar faces, celebrate another successful running of this iconic relay, and quietly stand by throughout the day ready to help if needed.
Congratulations to the organisers, volunteers, marshals and competitors for another outstanding event. We look forward to returning in 2027 and, hopefully, extending our lucky streak for another year.
