It was a real pleasure for Shelter Stone to provide medical support for the 67th edition of the Derwentwater 10, organised by Keswick Athletic Club on Sunday 1 November.
First held nearly seven decades ago, the Derwentwater 10 is a fantastic example of grassroots club racing. The 10-mile course takes runners clockwise around Derwentwater along a scenic, undulating open-road route. This year over 400 runners took part.
For Shelter Stone, supporting events like this matters. While we work extensively on large and complex endurance events, there is something particularly rewarding about helping a volunteer-led local club deliver a long-established race that remains firmly rooted in its running community.
We deliberately kept our medical provision small but carefully planned. Three independently mobile responders, each equipped with an AED and immediate-care equipment, were strategically positioned around the course and progressively relocated as the field moved around Derwentwater. This allowed a team of just three people to provide effective coverage at the start, finish and across the full 10-mile route.
Thankfully, it was a quiet day medically. Our only notable incident was a runner who collapsed at the finish, where our team immediately assessed and provided appropriate care.
It was a privilege to play a small part in the 67th Derwentwater 10, and we are delighted to support Keswick AC and the volunteers who continue to make events like this happen.
